Homily delivered by His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle during the Opening Mass for the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization on October 16, 2013, at 8a.m. at the Quadricentennial Pavilion of the University of Santo Tomas, España, Manila.
Magandang umaga po sa inyong lahat. Sa ngalan po ng Archdiocese of Manila, sa ngalan din po ng organizing committee ng Philippine Conference on the New Evangelization, sa ngalan din po ng mga religious men and women, at mga dakilang mga laiko sa archdiocese, kayo po ay aming maalab na tinatanggap sa kaunaunahang Philippine Conference on the New Evangelization.
Salamat po sa inyong pagdalo sa ating mga kapatid na Obispo, mga pari, mga religious at mga laiko sa mga dioceses, archdioceses at prelatures dito po sa Pilipinas.
And we would like to extend a especially warm welcome to our brothers and sisters from other Asian countries. We have the delegation from Brunei headed by Bishop Cornelius Singh, and I think all the priests of Brunei are here, including the bishop because they are only four of them in the country. So they are all here. We also welcome our friends from Taiwan with Bishop John Baptist Lee. We also have our friends from India, Bishop John, thank you Bishop. We have also friends from Jakarta, from Hong Kong, from Malaysia, from Japan, (Bishop Oshikawa will come in after lunch). USA! Hello!
Nagsimula sabi po naming na archdiocesan celebration of the Year of Faith and the response to the New Evangelization. At sabi naman bakit hindi natin buksan para makapiling natin ang ibang mga kapatid sa Pilipinas. Eh atin ng binuksan para sa ating mga kapatid sa Pilipinas bakit hindi pa natin buksan para sa ating mga kapatid sa Asya dahil tayo po ay may espesyal na papel sa misyon ng simbahan dito sa Asya. At siyempre kasama po natin ang ating mga minamahal na kapatid na hearing impaired.
Tayo po ay nagsisimula ng ating maliit na kontribusyon sa taon ng pananampalataya, at sa panawagan ng simbahan sa bagong ebanghelisasyon na may pag-asa at galak subalit hindi rin natin maaaring isaisangtabi at ipagwalangbahala ang nangyari lang kahapon, yung malakas na lindol. Ang mga kapatid natin sa Cebu at sa Bohol , lalo na sa dalawang lugar na yan ay talagang naapektuhan po. At parang nakakadurog ng puso makita lalo na ang mga antigong simbahan, mga bantayog ng pananampalataya sa daan-daang taon na ngayon ay napulbos, yung iba po ay hindi natin alam kung magagamit pa.
At hindi pa nga tuluyan nakakaahon ang atin mga kapatid sa Zamboanga, mula sa karahasan at pagkasira hindi lamang ng mga bahay kundi ng buong buhay ng marami sa kanila. Nandiyan pa ang mga hinagupit ng bagyong si Santi. At lahat po tayo parang hindi pa nakakabangon sa paghagupit ng mga nababalita tungkol sa pork barrel, tungkol po sa pinagpaguran ng mga simpleng mamamayan na hindi naman bumabalik bilang paglilingkod sa bayan.
Dear friends we’re opening this Philippine Conference on the New Evangelization in the context of the earthquake that happened in Cebu and Bohol and other parts of central Philippines.
We also cannot forget what happened to the people in Zamboanga, Jolo, Basilan, and Cotabato. Some are just recovering from the effects of the monsoon and typhoon Santi, the farmers of Nueva Ecija, the farmers of Aurora, Quezon and as the people in Philippines we are still grappling with the horrendous revelations these past months of the misuse of government funds , contributions of simple Filipinos meant for social service but unexplained now.
And not to mention the daily typhoon of the poor, the abandoned, the forgotten, those who need to hear the Good News.
Parang naririnig ko habang nakikita kop o yung mga simbahan na antigo na nasisira, parang naririnig kong muli ang yung sinabi ng Diyos kay San Francisco, “Itayo nyo muli ang aking simbahan. Build my church, build my church.”
Pero papaano natin maitatayo ang simbahan kung wala si Hesus na panulukang bato. Papaano natin maitatayo ang simbahan kung wala ang kanyang salita na nagbibigay buhay? Papaano natin maitatayo ang simbahan kung wala ang Banal na Espiritu na gagawing buhay na bato, ang mga pusong minsan ay nagiging singlamig ng bato. Paano ba itatayo ang simbahan kung wala ang pagibig na kumakawala sa sarili, ang Diyos ang kapwa at ang kalikasan ay yakapin. Papaano nga ba? Hanggang hindi ang dyos ang nagtatayo ng gusali, hindi ito maitatayo.
Before the the images of the church is crumbling due to the earthquake you could almost hear the message of God to St. Francis, “Build my church, rebuild my church.” But how can we reconstruct the church apart from Jesus the cornerstone? How can we construct the church without his life giving word? How can we strengthen the church without the Holy Spirit who will transform hearts of stones into living flesh and all of us into a living temple? How can we construct the church without love that enables us to break the shells of egoism and self interest, in order to embrace God, neighbor society and all of creation. Unless the Lord builds the house, in vain do the builders labor.
At ito po ang ibig natin maranasan at mapagibayo sa Philippine Conference on New Evangelization. Ito po ay maliit na ambag natin para maitayo natin muli ang simbahan kay Kristo, sa kanyang salita, sa Espitritu Santo, sa misyon, sa nagbabagong mundo, lalo na sa mundo na parang gumuho na. Pagasa sa gitna ng pagguho.
This is the whole point of the Philippine Conference on New Evangelization. It is a humble contribution to the construction and strengthening of the Church rooted in Jesus, his words, in the spirit, in the midst of ruins. Faith in the midst of ruins.
Kaya magandang na nagsisimula tayo sa Santa Misa. Naaalala natin kung gaano tayo minamahal ng isang pumasok sa buhay na para bagang oras oras ay gumuguho hanggang dumating sa Krus. Subalit sa halip na gumuho siya at ang buong mundo, nagkaroon ng bagong buhay dahil mas malakas ang kanyang pagibig kaysa sa kasiraan ng mundo. At sa pagalaala natin sa kanya, naalaala natin ang kinabukasan natin na kaniyang iniaalay sa atin.
It is just proper to open this conference on new evngelization by celebrating the Eucharist, a memorial of someone, Jesus whose daily life led to ruins, culminating on the cross. But his love which is greater that the rest of the world prevented a total collapse and the ruin of humanity . Love brought a new hope, a new heaven and new earth. We want to revive that love for that is the truth of the Good News of salvation. At huwag po tayo magmamalaki. Maganda ang mga pagbasa. Ang pagbasa ay nagpapaalaala sa atin, maging mapagpakumbaba sa ating misyon, sa ebanghelisasyon. Unang sinabi ni Hesus sa mga Pariseo, eh papaano naman kayo magiging daan ng evanghelyo, ng Mabuting Balita kung nakakalimutan ninyo ang katarungan at ang pagmamahal ng Diyos. Ikalawa papaano kayo makakadala ng mabuting balita kung ang hanap ninyo ay parangal, papuri, ang mga upuan ng dangal? Eh hindi naman pala ebanghelyo ang hanap ninyo kundi pangsariling kapakanan. At ikatlo, papaano kayo magiging daan ng Mabuting Balita, kung anu-ano ang inyong ipinapataw sa tao, pero kayo hindi ninyo ginagawa ang inyong iniuutos sa iba. Kaya tama si San Pablo, bakit ka nanghuhusga sa iba eh Gawain mo rin pala.
It is good to start this Conference on New Evangelization on a note of humility as indicated to us by the two readings. We want to be agents of evangelization? Well listen to Jesus, what he told the Pharisees and the experts in the law. First how can you be the teachers of the kingdom when you neglect justice and love of God. Isn’t the Kingdom of God about justice, peace that comes from the Spirit. Secondly, how can you be the bearer of the Good News when you seek praises, adulation and the best seats? You want honor not mission. People of ambition look for position but not for mission. Garantisado iyan, ang gusto lang posisyon, hindi misyon, Bakit? Ambisyon. Puro syon, syon, madaling tandaan iyan. Eh, yung mga Pariseo na ang hanap lang ay posisyon hindi mo maaasahan iyan magmisyon.
And thirdly he told the experts of the law, you impose the burdens of the law on others but you do not lift a finger to perform, to fulfill those same laws. Parang lagi tayong exempted sa iba. Nagulat ako doon sa isang misa, batang pari pa ako noon, nung dumating yung kolektor nung nakitang pari ako hindi ako hiningan. Bakit kami hindi hinihingan, puwede naman kami mag-contribute, eh. Bakit kami exempted? Kung mga kolektor mamaya daanan niyo kami, ho? If we ask others to give why can we not give and why should we not give? Tama ba ho iyon? So we open this congress fired up with love for God, for the Church and for the mission but we are starting it humbly, knowing that we are also in need of evangelization. The evangelizer to be a real evangelizer needs to be evangelized. We don’t go out to the ends of the earth pretending that we are better than the rest. As St. Paul said in the first reading we are all bound to be judged and so we are all in need of renewal. Kaya po sa ganitong diwa, magsaya tayo. Inaanyayahan po namin kayo na maging aktibo sa pakiisa sa mga workshops at sa lahat ng activities. Hindi lamang po kayo tagapakinig. Mahalaga po ang inyong mga kuwento. Mahalaga po ang inyong mga pagasa. Mahalaga po ang inyong mga karunungan at galing. Mahalaga ang inyong mga pighati at luha, pag wala po iyan at hindi ninyo ibinahagi hindi po magiging matagumpay ang congress na ito.
So we are inviting all of you to actively participate. Tell your stories, share your dreams, your sorrows, your fears, your tears. Only in the weaving of our stories with the story of Jesus and the wider story of humanity, especially here in Asia will we see again the path that the Lord opens to us to proclaim the Good News with new fervor, with new methods, and with new expressions.
